In and Around Our Programs...
Middle School CTE Academy
As our staff works hard to continue providing various and diverse opportunities for our students to engage in, we kicked off the second year of our Middle School CTE Academy this week at Bookcliff Middle School.
The Middle School CTE Program is an initiative by our Career & College Readiness Department to promote our CTE programs among incoming high school freshmen and enhance middle school student engagement throughout their educational journey. Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we welcome 18 students to the Career Center for our Middle School CTE Academy.
This program is designed not only to highlight the diverse Career and Technical Education (CTE) options within District 51 but also to immerse students in enjoyable and hands-on learning activities. Throughout the sessions, students will gain valuable insights into various CTE programs and have the opportunity to explore specific pathways, including Early Childhood Education, Riverwatch/Outdoor Education, and ACE (Career Exploration, Career Readiness, and building Employability Skills). As part of the Academy, students also have the unique opportunity to tour each of the 8 Career Center programs, ensuring they can explore the various CTE options offered by our Designated Career & Technical School.
Our D51 Career Center is one of only 10 Designated Career & Technical Schools in the state of Colorado and the only one on the Western Slope. This academy, which is grant-supported, serves as an excellent opportunity to inspire and engage these young students, laying the foundation for their journey into high school and beyond D51.
Shoutout to our Cheri Taylor and our Career & College Readiness Department, Career Center Campus staff, and the dedicated Workforce Readiness Team for their commitment to empowering our students with workforce preparation opportunities. The Middle School CTE Academy is a great example of the innovative and impactful initiatives these departments create for our students.
And a special thanks to the Bookcliff Middle School Admin Team for supporting student recruitment and the Career Center staff who volunteered after school to provide these valuable opportunities. They say, “It takes a village,” and your collective efforts all contribute to preparing & supporting our students, ensuring the success of our workforce readiness initiatives, and ultimately contributing to the success of our students after graduation.
Health Science Program
Health Science Program 🩺
- Students in Health Science are bringing awareness against the dangers of Kratom.
- By Kayla Cooley, Veda Irwin, and Lindsey Cooley
Kratom. What is it? Kratom is an herb that is advertised for many different things, including
pain relief, mood improvement, and helping with focus. With up to 38 strains, this herb is
marketed as a safe, energizing, pain-relieving supplement made most commonly into expensive
teas and supplement-like pills. However, when overused, it affects the same receptors in the
brain that opioids affect. Soon after, a user of Kratom can then become addicted to the
supplement rather than experiencing the beneficial factors that were advertised to them. Many
people have been questioning why Kratom can be sold to people younger than someone who can
purchase nicotine or marijuana. People are fighting for the age to be restricted to 21 since when
overused, it acts like an opioid. While Kratom is illegal in some states, it is still legal in
Forty-four states in the U.S.A. The drug is not yet FDA-approved; therefore, sellers can market it
however they would like, making it easily manipulated into thinking it is safe. If you or someone
you know is struggling with addiction, do not hesitate to contact the Colorado Kratom Hotline at
(719) 602–0914.
